Your parents probably claim you as a dependent?

You don't have to file if you only have W2 income under 13,850 (2023) but you can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17. But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back. If you got a 1099Misc or 1099NEC you have to file it as self employment income no matter how small the amount.

Be sure on your return you check the box that says you can be claimed on someone else’s return. If your only income is W2 and under 13,850 you do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.

If you received a W-2 check to see if tax was withheld since you would want to file a get it back. If you got a 1099-NEC you have to file. If you do file it is important that you check the box saying that you can be claimed by someone else.

Q. Do you need to file taxes if you make less than $1000 for the year?

A. No, unless it's from self employment. The self employed must pay their social security and medicare (FICA) tax even though they may owe no income tax or you are a dependent.

A dependent (or someone who can be a dependent) must file a tax return for 2023 if he had any of the following:

  1.          Total income (wages, salaries, taxable scholarship etc.) of more than $13,850 (2023).
  2.          Unearned income (interest, dividends, capital gains, unemployment, taxable portion of 529 distribution) of more than $1250 (2023)
  3.          Unearned income over $400 and gross income of more than $1250 (2023)
  4.          Household employee income (e.g. baby sitting, lawn mowing) over $2600 ($13,850 if under age 18)
  5.          Other self employment income over $432, including money on a form 1099-NEC

Even if he had less, he is allowed to file if he needs to get back income tax withholding. He cannot get back social security or Medicare tax withholding.

In TurboTax, he indicates that somebody else can claim him as a dependent, at the personal information section.
