Do I need to do anything special in Turbo Tax if I am preparing a tax return for a relative (i.e., my grandmother)?

My grandmother has dementia. I was asked by my parents to file her tax return this year because I have the ability to do so with multiple filings in my version of Turbo Tax. However, I am not my grandmother's power of attorney...my uncle is her POA. I saw on IRS.gov that there are special forms that can be used to designate a POA or Representative, and I was not sure if I need to do anything with those.

Is there anything special that I (or my uncle) need to do in this situation before e-filing on her behalf?

Form 2848 is the IRS form for a power of attorney. As you complete your grandmother's tax return in TurboTax, you should complete and print a Form 2848; it doesn't not need to be signed by your grandmother, but your uncle should sign where indicated as the attorney-in-fact, and attach a copy of his general power of attorney document that your grandmother had previously executed. These documents should then be mailed or faxed to the IRS Service Center for your part of the country, based on the "Where to File" chart found here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i2848.pdf.

You should then complete your grandmother's tax return, print it, have your uncle sign it, attach another copy of the Form 2848 and power of attorney forms, and mail it to the address in the filing instructions.

I am filing a 2020 tax return for my mother and I have POA.  Every form imaginable is under Forms in TT, but I do not see a Form 2848 anywhere.  What do I do?

Form 2848 is not supported by TurboTax as it does not get filed with the tax return. You can click here for the downloadable copy of the form from the IRS.
