In order to claim your son as a dependent, one of the tests that must be met is that you provide over half of his support.
To claim your son as a dependent, the following must be met:
- Your son can not be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
- Your son is a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
- Your son is not filing a joint return with their spouse.
- Your son is under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
- There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
- Your son lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
- Your son didn't provide more than half of his own support for the year.
