Do both spouses have to sign a return when we are filing seperately

This is for a state of Virginia tax return. Only my wife had to file there as I did not live there or have any earnings there. It asks for both of us to sign.

No, if you are filing as married filing separate, only the spouse filing the return need to sign it.

However, if you are filing as married filing jointly on a VA state income tax return and only your wife has VA income to report on a VA nonresident income tax return, then you will both need to sign the return.
