Deceased taxpayer

My father in law passed away.  My wife is executor.  My father in laws wife has not been nice with my wife to say the least.  She has moved out of my father in laws house.  My father in law just had a.pension and social.securoty as income his tax liability is minimal at most.  His wife had more income.  My wife does not want to deal with her again.  Can we file married file separately for the tax year?  Thanks

Generally, the short answer is "yes, she can do so", but she should absolutely seek local legal counsel for this matter.
