If  he did not print copies of your tax returns, then the only way to gain access to the prior year information it to log into the account that he used. You will be able to do that using your Apple. 

So sorry for your loss.   Please wait before trying to set up a new account----for your 2020 return you are allowed to file a joint return.    You will need to use the same account and user ID to get access to the account your spouse was using.  If you do not know it  (did he write it down somewhere?) you will need to get help from customer support.

 For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return.  That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $24,800 (+ $1300 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info,  there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

If you have dependent children still living at home, you will be able to file as a qualified widow for the next two years after this tax return.  Post back if you need further help.

In addition to your own photo ID, you must include one of the following documents: 

• A copy of the Death Certificate – The name of the surviving spouse will need to be matched to a Joint E-filed Return in our system
• A court order issuing Power of Attorney for the deceased and IRS form 56. (required for non spouse)
• A court order marking them the executor of the estate and IRS form 56. (required for non spouse)

These additional documents may be included with the initial scan of the Photo ID.
You will also need to print and mail the return and include IRS Form 56.
