Question

Deceased dependents

My parents were both my dependents for years.

They both passed away this year, dad, February, 2022 and mom, August, 2022.

Can I still claim them this year?

Also, I will be receiving monies from their estate via a check?

Do I need to claim this?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello @msallustio44,  I am sorry to hear about the loss of your parents.

You can claim them as dependents still this year, as long as you provided their support until their passing.  Link Here

I have some helpful links for your situation:

This one explains claiming your parents as dependents -

This one Explains protecting your inheritance from taxes -

Depending on what state you live in, there might be different rules for inheritance.  I would suggest a quick google search for your state rules or sitting with a local professional to help protect your interests.
