Could I have one job exempt and the other pay 100 % of the money to federal, if I have two jobs?

So, I have two jobs, one part-time and one full-time.  My part time job does not pay state taxes on my behalf since it is in a state that does have state income taxes. My fulltime job is taking out state income tax.  So, I was wondering if could have the part-time job income cover 100 % of my federal obligation (by adding more withholdings per paycheck) and then my fulltime job I would check exempt on the federal w4?  Does that work out (assuming that my part-time covers all of my federal obligations in a year, which it usually does)?

 

Another question, I have if I check exempt from one job does that job still pay the employer portion of federal withholdings or is my employer exempt from paying since I am saying I am exempt?

You can’t be exempt. 

If an employee qualifies, he or she can also use Form W-4 to tell you not to deduct any federal income tax from his or her wages. To qualify for this exempt status, the employee must have had no tax liability for the previous year and must expect to have no tax liability for the current year.

 

Payroll taxes are always taken out even if no tax was withheld.

So I have two incomes.  One of the income does not take out taxes in my state, the other does. Both take out  federal withholdings.  What I am trying to do is have my income, job that does not have any state income tax taken out.  Pay for all 100 percent of my federal withholdings for both jobs.  Then have the other job not withholding anything by putting a ridiculous amount in the box so that my tax is not paid since I am paying it all from another job.  Is that doable at all? 

 

I was thinking I could do this by saying I am exempt.  Or by putting an insane dollar amount for the dependent care deduction. Or by changing my deduction from standard to an insane dollar amount to prevent taxes from being withheld from one employer and have the other employer pay for the difference completely.

There are multiple questions here;

 

  • Can you cover your income taxes for your part time job with your full time job?
    • Yes, the IRS doesn't care where they get the money from as long as they get it on a timely basis
  • Could you claim exempt on your part time job?
    • You can, but Social Security and Medicare will still be taken out, and your employer will continue to pay the other half.
  • Can you put an excessive number in deductions to result in no tax withheld?
    • Yes, it would go on line 4b of the W-4 Form.
  • Or by changing my deduction from standard to an insane dollar amount to prevent taxes from being withheld from one employer and have the other employer pay for the difference completely.   
    • As an alternative you can enter additional withholdings in box 4c.
