When you buy Turbo Tax in the store the state is included free. Why if I do the online version I am paying a separate price for federal and a separate price for state?

If you do not use the TurboTax Free online edition, but the Deluxe online edition or higher then the state tax return is an additional charge.

The TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions installed on a personal computer and the TurboTax online web-based editions are separate programs.

The desktop editions of Deluxe and higher come with one free state program download included in the purchase price.

There are no e-file fees when using the online editions, federal or state.  But only one tax return can be used per account and User ID.

The desktop editions come with 5 free federal e-files.  But there is a state e-file charge of $25 for each state return e-filed.  With the desktop editions there is no limit on the number of tax returns that can be completed and filed.  Plus there is direct access to all forms, schedules and worksheets, whereas with the online editions there is no direct access.
