My appointment with a tax expert isn't until later in the month. So I'm wondering what is the best approach today - file return "as is" and then amend or submit extension only.

If you have a balance due I would recommend filing it now and then ammending if needed.  An alternative would be to file an extension, pay what is due now.  Then you don't need to file an amendment.
