Compensation income and the gains seems to be greyed out in the income section (ESPP stock section) - Do it myself for my first stock lot. In the others, I am able to edit.
Does the software need updates to handle this?

It depends if you are in TurboTax Online or Desktop. If you are using Desktop, go to the main menu under Help or Online and click Check for Updates.

Do I need to enter ESPP transactions?
I have encountered the same issue, it similarly occurred only on my first lot edited.
Using TT H&B desktop edition, fully updated after installing from CD. Running on 64-bit Windows 10 Home 1909. Attempted to update but no updates were available. Attempted save of my return and restarting TT, and retrying the entry steps, but this did not resolve the issue.
How can this issue be resolved? Or is there a workaround? My tax calculations will be incorrect until this is resolved. Thanks.

This is still happening with TurboTax 2021 (I am using Premier Desktop). It must be triggered if I try to edit same sales record with two different options without completing the update of all boxes - "Walk me through adding more info" vs. "I have all my info".
There was no option to correct this problem once it happened. I had to delete the record and add one myself. Fortunately, I didn't need to remove all of the records that were imported by TurboTax then updated by me. I only needed to remove that corrupt record and add a replacement myself.
Again, there was no option to add a record to already imported set of records. I had to create one new group of sales records.
TurboTax is great in many aspects, but with these hidden bugs and missing features sprinkled everywhere...
