Question

Claiming a parent as a dependent

Good afternoon,

My father is 81. He no longer files a tax return because he has depleted his investments and receives social security and VA disability. A TurboTax agent told me he no longer needed to file last year. I provide his care for anything that he can no longer do for himself. He buys groceries and pays our car insurance. I take care of everything else. Am I legally able to claim him?

If he has no taxable income and you provide more than half of his support you can claim him.
