Claiming a dependent

Hi,

I’m living with my boyfriend, who received some unemployment last year, but definitely didn’t support himself. Wondering if I’m even allowed to (because of unemployment), would it still be a 1040 if I could, and anything else that might be helpful? Sorry, I know it’s kind of a loaded question because there’s a lot of rules, but any help is appreciated!

In order to claim your boyfriend as a dependent you would have had to live with him for the entire year, provide more than half of his support, cannot be claimed by someone else and he couldn't have received more than $4,300 in income.

If he meets those criteria, then yes, you could claim him and yes you would still file a 1040.
