Child's W2

My 19-year-old has a W2 of about 24,000. She is a full-time college student, lives at home, and does not provide more than half her support. She did not receive any stimulus checks during 2021 since she had no W2 for 2020. When she input her info, she selected that someone could claim her, which then in turn, made her ineligible for the stimulus amounts of 2021. Should she select that no one else claims her? And then do I delete her from my tax return?

No, if she is not providing more than half of her own support, she should not say she is supporting herself on her tax return.

If she was your dependent in 2020 and 2021, you received the stimulus check for her.

So, I only received a stimulus amount on my 15-year-old and not on my 19-year-old.  The 2020 letter from the IRS stated that because she was 17 years old (at the time) that she was not considered a qualifying child and therefore I did not receive anything for her. Was this incorrect and if so, is there a form I can file?

Please claim your daughter as your dependent on your return if she does not supply more than half her own support and she is your dependent.

You should get the Recovery Rebate Credit for the same amount as the Stimulus Payment you did not get for her.

The IRS was correct to not send you the stimulus because they were not sure how your daughter would be filing for 2021.

Since she is your dependent, you will get the credit.

The Third payment (and Recovery Rebate Credit) was expanded to include dependents over 17.

    According to the IRS:

    • Qualifying dependents expanded. Unlike the first two payments, the third payment was not restricted to children under 17. Eligible individuals received a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

She can be claimed as a dependent so she has to enter on her tax return that she can be claimed as a dependent.  She is not eligible for the $1.400 Recovery Rebate Credit.
