So last year my wife and I filed married filling jointly but this year I'm wanting to claim her as a dependent as for she did not work....

You cannot claim your spouse as a dependent.  Per the IRS, a spouse can never be a dependent.  However, filing jointly with your spouse you will get two exemptions on your tax return, same as a dependent
