Catch-up HSA contribution made to the prior calender year

Before Apr 15 this year, I made contribution to my prior year's HSA to maximize HSA limit,  but my outdated W2 is still showing my last year HSA contribution only. Even though I will receive the updated form 5498-A after Apr 15,  how can I handle this issue for tax return before the upcoming tax deadline? Do I need to request an updated W2 from my employer ?  Thanks.

Enter them as contributions that you made that are not entered in box 12 of your W-2.  It will deduct them from your taxable income and you will get a credit.  Make sure that your employer does not include them in box 12 of your 2023 W2.

Thank you, Robert. Do you mean that I can manually enter the additional contribution to tax form without requesting an updated W-2?

Did you make this extra contribution THROUGH your employer or not? Most taxpayers would have made this contribution directly to the HSA custodian. In this case, you would NOT ask for a corrected W-2, since your employer had nothing to do with the contribution.

Instead, you would get back into the HSA interview, and on the screen where it is headed "Let's enter [name] HSA contributions", enter this contribution in the second line where it reads, "Any contributions you personally made (not through your employer)".

Come back and tell us if my assumption is wrong.
