A spouse is never a dependent. If you file as married filing jointly, you will have a larger standard deduction and possibly lower tax rates. Married filing jointly is always allowed when you are married, even if one spouse does not work. A joint return simply lists all the income and deduction of both spouses on one return.
No. A spouse is NEVER a dependent, but you simply file jointly even if on spouse has not income. That is MUCH better than a dependent anyway. (A dependent only gets a $500 deductions while a joint return gets a $24,800 vs $12,400 for single deduction.)
