Can i continue my return after filing an extension?

Everything you've described sounds like you went through the filing process and chose to file your actual return by mail.

If you haven't actually filed it (either by mail or efile), you can open it back up to keep working on it.   Here's how:

  • Log in and go to your 2015 Tax Timeline.
  • If TurboTax thinks you are finished, there will be no orange "Take me to my return" (continue return) button.
  • So in that case, scroll down to "Some things you can do."
  • Choose "Add a State."  (you don't really add one; that's just to get the return to open up.)
  • Once the return is open, you can keep working on it, and even change the filing method, if desired, when you are ready to actually file it.

NOTE:  Do NOT use this method to open a return to make changes to an already-filed return (one that has actually been mailed or efiled.)   If you later need to make changes to an already-filed return, you have to go through the formal amending process, and your return must start off exactly as originally filed.

Did you make a payment when you filed your extension?

Here's how to navigate in Online TurboTax to the place to enter the extension payment you made so you get credit for it on your return.   If you used TurboTax to file the extension, it *might* be prepopulated, but you should check anyway.

  • Under the Federal Taxes tab (or Personal tab in Home and Business)
  • Click subtab "Deductions & Credits."
  • "I'll choose what I work on." (or it may say "All tax breaks.")
  • Scroll down to topic "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid."
  • Find subtopic OTHER INCOME TAXES, and click START or Revisit.
  • On the "Other Income Taxes" screen choose the type of extension payment  you made and click START (or Update).  Be sure you choose the correct year.
  • Continue the rest of that section.
Once you have entered the extension payment (or confirmed it if it's prepopulated), then before filing verify that you are getting credit for it.   Look at Line 70 of your Form 1040 and verify that the Federal figure is correct.  A state extension payment is entered in the same navigation steps as above.  If applicable, verify that it appears on the state return prior to filing.

When you log in and go to the 2015 Tax Timeline. what does the 2015 Tax Timeline look like?  i.e., what are the options shown?  Are you sure you're in the 2015 Tax Timeline and not the 2014 Tax Timeline?

If there's no evidence of a 2015 return in the 2015 Tax Timeline, and it wants you to start a 2015 return, you may have multiple accounts and are in the wrong one.  We can tell you how to troubleshoot multiple accounts to find the right one.

This is an old answered thread from last year that has long been moved to the answered queue.   Your comment won't show up to the bulk of the forum as needing help.  You should start a new thread at the link below so it will show up as needing help, and explain your situation so people will know what all your issues are.

You said:  "It seems to want me to file an amended return."

Do NOT choose that option if it hasn't been filed.   Use the method to open the return I mentioned above instead.
