Online is only good for 1 return per account. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts. You can start another return in TurboTax Online by:
The second account must have its own unique User ID. It can be an email address (different from the other User ID), but it doesn't have to be an email address.. In the account settings profile, however, as VolvoGirl mentioned above, you can use the same email address as yours for notification purposes, if you desire to get the notifications about the son's account, or you can use the son's email address in the profile if you want him to get his own notifications.
In the online version, I am trying to use my email address to create a second account and it says, “That email address is already in use” (or something to that effect). It won’t allow me to create a new account for a second return. Please help!
Don't use the email address for the username. (write down what you do end up using, or you will forget)
like "TomsTaxes" (but not something too personal)
There is a separate email address setting in its eventual account settings.
Thanks, SteamTrain, but it’s not asking for a username, it’s asking for an email address. Ugh!
When I enter TomsTaxes, it says “Enter a valid email address.”

They must have recently made the User ID more restrictive when opening a new account. I just tested, and the account creation interface also failed for me when I tried a username instead of an email address for the User ID. Folks who have already been using a username that isn't an email address must be grandfathered in. If it's only taking an email address for the User ID, then you'll need to use a second email address. If you want account administration emails, notification emails, etc. to go to a different email address, you can adjust that in the account settings profile section as SteamTrain mentioned above.
That has to be a recent Online account software screwup.
For folks needing multiple accounts for parents/kids, and don't want to use desktop, that creates all kinds of unnecessary problems.
Is this something new that needs to be discussed with the moderators as a possible Online account screwup?....Or do folks need to use some other strange workaround? (or maybe it was just an overnight temporary issue)
I tried creating a new one too, and was blocked....But see below

I get a 6-digit code to enter in as part of the login process. After I enter the 6-digit code, a screen pops up with all of my TTX account UserIDs. Do you get that?
I do....but I have 7 different (old) test accounts I've created over the years, that are registered to my current email. I'm wondering if the system sees this (for creating a new account) and is now blocking new accounts attached to one email address....IF...if they already have 5 or more old accounts with that email???
That could be why @mesquitebean and I are being blocked...and maybe yourself too?
