I have been on an F-1 visa for over 5 years as a Ph.D. student in California, US.
Which makes me a tax resident. I have an SSN since I received a stipend from the school/advisor.
This is the first year I do tax as a tax resident so I have no ITIN numbers for my wife and my 10-year-old kid.
I found that I cannot do e-File since the ITIN number is missing.
Could I attach W-7 forms of my wife and kid to the printed documents from TurboTax and file by mail?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You have to apply for an ITIN for your spouse and child.
Please read this TurboTax Help topic on How to file your tax return with a W-7.
You can't e-file. You have to file by mail or in person.
Thanks for the reply and information.
Could experts help me fill the W-7 forms for my spouse and my child?
Yes and no. We would not be able to fill the form out for you, or walk you through step by step as this is not a form TurboTax supports.
If you have specific questions, we may be able to provide information on specific topics, however, the form is pretty basic and you would be the one to have the information for this form. You will also need to send in supporting documentation with the form. You will need to send originals or official copies from the issuing agency.
For example, in the "Other Information" section.
If I use the school record for my under-18 kid, do I still need to attach the I-94 and I-20 along with her passport?
And for my spouse, with her driver's license and passport, do I still need to attach I-94 and I-20?
And for the "Issued by:", "No,:", and "Exp. date:" columns, do I fill in the information on the I-20?
Thanks for the reply, I should mail my Federal Tax Return with W-7 to the IRS at that address.
But what about the California State Tax Return?
Yes, both returns need to be mailed.
