Question

Camera as a college expense.

My son is taking a photography class where the syllabus says a camera is needed. He is using a old camera that isn't good quality, so would like to replace it. Is it too late to buy one if the semester is half over and have it qualify as a education expense?  This will be for next year's taxes.

No, it would be an education expense for 2021 if purchased in 2021.

A camera is a logical education expense for a photography student.

I know that it will be for 2021 - That's why I said it would be for next year's taxes. The main question is - is it too late since the semester is already half over. Do you have to purchase something at the beginning of the semester in order for it to count?

No. If your son's current camera needs to be upgraded because the one he is currently using is not taking quality pictures needed for his classes, then it would not be too late. It is still a valid education expense.
