Hello!
I received a refund last year (for both federal and state returns). Later, I amended both files and had to send money in. The money I paid was less than the initial refund amount.
To identify the amount of refund to report can I simply do:
Refund - Payment = Refund to claim?

No, you would enter the original amount of your state refund. If you paid any additional state taxes, you can include that payment as part of your itemized deductions.
Your taxable state refund is calculated based on how much the deduction affected your refund or tax bill.

Hi Barbara,
To clarify, the amendment was done because I was missing a W2, so I never should have received that large of a refund in the first place. Do I still put the original amount and not the corrected value?
Yes. Keep in mind that when you are amending, the refund tracker monitors the difference from your original filing to the amended return. It does not include any original refund or balance due. If you are claiming any previously unclaimed income, you may see the difference as an additional amount due.
