Big change in taxable SS benefit

In 2022, my taxable SS income was $1,984 and non-taxable was $26,349. In 2023, my taxable SS income is $26,183 and the non-taxable is $4,620. Why the difference?

You reported more taxable income in 2023 than you did in 2022.

 

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

  • Married Filing Jointly - $32,000
  • Single or Head of Household - $25,000
  • Married Filing Separately - 0

Thank you for the information. This has resulted in me owing more than $6,000 to the IRS that I don't have. How do I set up a payment plan with my favorite uncle (tongue firmly in teeth)?
