Amending 2021 tax return

In 2021 my wife had an excess contribution to her 401k due to a job change. When we discovered the excess during tax filing in 2022 we contacted her employer and had the excess withdrawn.  They were unable to send a 1099R for the excess contribution withdrawal and we created a substitute 1099R using form 4852.  In 2023 we received the 1099R dated 2022 for the excess contribution in 2021. Now that I've started the amended 2021 return in TurboTax, do I delete the substitute 1099R and add the official 1099R? The amount is $20 more than what we had on the substitute 1099R.  Also, the new 1099R used Distribution code P.  When I use the code in turbo tax it shows for 2020.

Amending 2021 tax return

Yes, if the received 2022 Form 1099-R is different than what you had reported on your 2021 return then you will need to amend your 2021 tax return. Delete the substitute Form 1099-R entry and enter the 2022 Form 1099-R with the code P you received.

Please be aware, code P will say in the drop-down menu "Return of contribution taxable in 2020" but you can ignore that since the follow-up question will tell TurboTax that it will be taxable in 2021.
