Am I a dependent?

I am 21years old,

Full time college student,

And live with my parents.

After calculating my living expense (grocery, rent, utilities..etc) and dividing it by the number of people in my house it came up to aprox $10,000 for the year.

I interned for the summer and made approximately 6k. While reviewing my chase account I have spent $6,554 last year like traveling, eating out, clothing. I also have credit card expense of like 1k, I’m not sure if that counts.

My mother always gives me money like cash and buys me clothing.

Am I still considered her dependent? Would this be considered the 1/2 rule. I'm not sure if my parents contribute half my expenses.

Please see the information below on what the IRS considers as a dependent and look further down to learn a little more about financial support. The question is whether or not you can support yourself WITHOUT your parents contribution i.e. living with them and receiving money to cover costs. Make sure that you and your parents discuss which option is best for your family.

What does "financially support another person" mean?
