Alimony and Filing Jointly

My wife and I separated in 2918, and have a legal property settlement that required me to pay her alimony in 2018.  We decided to file jointly for 2018.  Can I report that I paid alimony and she received it?  I would pay less Virginia taxes if I am able to.
