Adult Disabled Child

I have an adult totally and permanently disabled child who lives in a separate home from me.  However, I pay her rent and all the utilities for her home as well as my own.  I am single.  I am at her home about 10 days a month.  Would this qualify me as Head of Household?  I know a parent does not have to live with me to be considered Head of Household.  Would this also apply to a disabled child?

No.

There are conditions to satisfy in order to file as Head of household. You must:

  • Pay for more than half of the household expenses
  • Be considered unmarried on the last day of the tax year, and
  • You must have a qualifying child or dependent.

Your qualified child must also live within your home for more than 6 months during the year.

Please read this TurboTax article for more information.

You can claim her as your dependent if you provided more than half of her support during the year.

Please read this TurboTax article on Who Can I Claim as a Tax dependent?
