Addresses mismatch

Hello,

My daughter had a summer internship. During that period, she lived part of the time with her sister in Brooklyn NY, instead of with us in NJ. She claims she doesn't remember giving that address to the employer but somehow the W2 shows her NY address. Still, she got two W2 forms: one "full" (i.e. most boxes have info) for NJ in box 15 and one half-empty where everything above box 13 is empty. (I also get two W2s b/c I live in NJ and derive part of the income from NY. But at least my address is the correct one in NJ.) It is unclear why the employer withheld her NJ taxes or actually found out that she lived in two states. But she got two W2s, had taxes withheld in two states and now we must deal with it.

Must we change her address in TT to the temporary residence in Brooklyn so that it match with info on W2 or I can leave her address in NJ as permanent and state that the address in Brooklyn as temporary? Does the address on W2 even matter?

Thanks!

x

Addresses mismatch

No, use her current address in TurboTax.  The address on the W-2 is irrelevant, since many people move during the year.

She will file a Resident New Jersey return, reporting all her income there.  NJ will give a credit for tax paid to New York.

She will file a Non-Resident return to New York (unless she lived there 184 days, which NY considers 'residency').

Here's more info on Filing as NJ Resident/NY Non-Resident.

Great! One problem though: I don't see a way to enter a temporary address. I can only enter the day she moved (to the new permanent residence) but not the fact that she returned.

You do not have to enter a temporary address. The questions TurboTax asks are what is required for the tax return.  If it dies not ask for the ending date, you do not need to enter it. @akrupitsky
