To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

You can not upload Form(s) SSA-1099/1099-SM in TurboTax. They must be entered manually. The 1099-SM is a self-mailer form of Form 1099-SSA.

To enter your 1099-SM you will:

  1.  Click on "Search" at the top right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type "Form 1099-SSA"  in the search bar
  3. Click on the link that says "Jump to Form SSA-1099"
  4. Your screen will say, "Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits in 2025? Click on Yes.
  5. Your next screen will say Tell us about the benefits you received. Select Social Security benefits. And Continue
  6. Enter your information and Continue
  7. Answer all follow-up questions to complete your entry.
