Hi,

My husband and I received 1099-G from the State of Maryland and it is not for unemployment and in box 3 it says it for year 2019.

I use the serach engie on turbotax to find the 1099-g form and I get Were you or name required to repay unemployment benefits (uncommon)?

How do I enter this in?

1099-G

It sounds like the Form 1099-G that you received is reporting the amount of your state tax refund from your 2019 Maryland state tax return.

This information needs to be included as part of your tax return, especially if you itemized deductions on your 2019 Federal return.

Use the following steps to go to the section of TurboTax to enter the information from the Form 1099-G:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “state and local tax refund” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to state and local tax refund
  • Click on the blue “Jump to state and local tax refund” link

Then, be sure to check the box saying you received a "state or local tax refund even if not reported on 1099-G" to move forward.

1099-G

If you paid taxes in Maryland in 2019 then that 099-G you received is very likely reporting your Maryland state tax refund. This will be included in your 2020 taxable income only if you're itemizing deductions rather than taking the standard deduction, which is more likely. If you are prompted to report it, it would be as follows:

  • Federal Taxes
  • Wages & Income
  • 1099-MISC and Other Common Income
  • State and Local Tax Refunds on Form 1099-G
  •
