You could only report that on the tax return for the deceased or their estate, assuming you are not liable on the debt. You are probably not liable if you did not receive a Form 1099-C in your name and social security number. You can't file married-joint in a year after the year of death. The cancellation of debt would apply to the year it was cancelled, so you could only file an estate tax return for that year if after the year of death. Only the administrator for the estate would be responsible for filing that. You can contact the IRS for guidance or wait and see if they contract you. They would have a record of your wife being deceased so they may not contact you about it.
