1095-A

I am filing taxes and have a question regarding the 1095-A form. I got a copy of the 1095-A form saying I had coverage in January 2022. However, I didn't pay my monthly fee because I wasn't happy with my monthly premium and didn't need such expensive coverage. After January, that coverage was terminated. I didn't go to any clinic or claim that coverage in January 2022.

Should I claim that coverage anyway as stated in my 1095-A form or not (because I didn't pay or use it)?

Yes, you must enter the 1095-A that you received.  If you omit entering your 1095-A into TurboTax your tax return may be rejected.  The 1095-A is used to complete your Premium Tax Credit Form 8962 and reconcile your Premium Tax Credit.  If you do not input your 1095-A, it may cause a delay in your refund and may affect your future advance credit payments.

Please see the TurboTax article What is Form 1095-A: Health Insurance Marketplace Statement. For instructions on entering your 1095-A, please see the TurboTax Help article Where do I enter my 1095-A?

1095-A

Thank you so much for the explanation. I tried to enter the information from my 1095-A form, which has $0 for columns A and B, and $213 for column C. TurboTax is saying that "Please enter an amount" for column A and "Must be greater than $)". What can I do?

1095-A

That is odd that Columns A and B are blank but sometimes they come that way.

Please check your 1095-A online or call the Marketplace to see if they have an updated form.

  1. Log in to your HealthCare.gov account.
  2. Click the green "Continue" button.
  3. Choose "Go to my applications & coverage" at the top of the screen.
  4. Under "Your existing applications," select your 2018 application — not your 2019 application. It will be below your 2019 application.
  5. Select “Tax forms” from the menu on the left.
  6. Download all 1095-As shown on the screen.

Get screen-by-screen directions, with pictures (PDF).

Note: If you can't find your 1095-A in your Marketplace account, contact the Marketplace Call Center.

  • If it is also missing the information online, Column A will be the monthly cost of the premium for your health insurance. You can fill that in with the correct number.
  • Usually the second lowest cost Silver plan (SLCSP) premium can be found in Column B of your Form 1095-A, but sometimes it may be missing or incorrect.  Click this link for the Marketplace calculator tool to determine what number should go in Column B.

You MUST enter the 1095-A if you got one ... failure to do so will result in an IRS rejection.
