Question

1040X

I successfully filed my 2022 Federal and State taxes.  Afterwards I found a 1099R that I missed.  I filed a 1040X to include it and it did not change my refund or payment.

Problem: When I press the button to transmit the new return, I'm taken to Form 8888 that asks me which accounts I want the money split into or if I want bonds.  I want none of this but I am in an endless loop as I try to click out of it and therefore can't file the 1040X. Any suggestions?

Yes, you will need to delete Form 8888 from your amendment to get it e-filed.

If you are using TurboTax Online:

    1. Open your return and  scroll down to Tax Tools on the bottom of the left side menu.
    2. Select Tools.
    3. Click on Delete a form (third on the list at the bottom of the screen).
    4. Find Form 8888 on the list of forms.
    5. Click Delete to the right.
    6. Confirm your Delete.
    7. Click Continue with my return.

If you are using the Desktop version (from a disc or download):

    1. Click Forms toward the upper right corner.
    2. Find Form 8888 on the list on the left.
    3. Highlight it, then click Delete in the lower left corner of the reading pane.
    4. Click on Step by Step in the upper right corner to return to the interview.

Thank you for the quick response.  This did not work

I use the desktop version and I deleted the form.  Turbotax then takes me back to step by step and the the "How I want to file" question.  I stepped all the way through again and the form 8888 reappears.  I've gone through and deleted it twice.  I tried to find it and delete it before I get to the transmit step but it seems the form doesn't appear at all until that step.

If the tax did not change, you may not need to amend the return.

An amended return (1040X) is only required if you owe tax from the change.

You should wait until your original return has been processed by the IRS.

The IRS may have already considered the missing 1099-R and accounted for it.

Please make sure the 1040X shows that no tax is due.

If no tax is due, I suggest you do not try to file a 1040X

If you insist on trying to e-file the 1040X, I suggest you fill out the 8888 and see if you can continue in the TurboTax program.
