Tax Year Prior to 2020: 1040X Filing

I have a 1040-X filled out due to the fact that I received a 1099-INT after I e-filed my taxes with Credit Karma and I did not list a qualified HSA distribution on my 8889. The official instructions for filling out the 1040-X are not available on the IRS website yet. The most recent revision is for January 2019, but the 1040-X form is up-to-date as of January 2020. Am I able to mail my 1040-X in or should I wait until the instructions are officially up-to-date?

As we don't know when IRS will issue the most updated Form 1040-X instructions, you can reference the Form 1040-X instructions issued in January 2019 to do your 2019 amendment Form 1040-X.

Also, please wait until the IRS accepted your return.  You should not try to amend your return until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.  If by editing the information does not change the refund or amount you owe, you do not need to submit the amendment.

Can I file my amended return (have already received my refund) using the Turbotax form 1040X that has printed all over it "DO NOT FILE, FORM NOT FINAL" printed all over it.

I want to get my taxes done!

You will need to wait just a little bit more.

Now that your return has been processed and you have received your refund, you will need to amend your return using Form 1040-X (not available until about mid-February).

Form 1040X can't be e-filed per IRS regulations.

After you finish amending in TurboTax, we'll guide you through printing and mailing your 1040X along with any required attachments.

\Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.
