Question

2025 BBB TurboTax calculation might be wrong

I just got a notice from the IRS adjusting my refund.

"We changed the amount of taxable Social Security benefits to correct an error in the calculation reported on your return."

Have others gotten this message?

    What is "BBB TurboTax?"

On your Form 1040, Line 6b, is the taxable Social Security amount shown as zero?   If so, you may have answered a question wrong about whether you and/or a spouse resided in one of the listed foreign countries that do not tax USA Soc Sec.   At least this is a common error that has happened to some Soc Sec recipients this year.

@ VolvoGirl may have a screen shot?

Save a pfd of your return with all the worksheets.  Check the top of the Turbo Tax Social Security Worksheet. There is a box to check if you lived in a foreign country.  If it is Yes then your Social Security is exempt from tax.

Right after you enter the Social Security the very next screen asks if you lived in a foreign country.  If you entered a SSA-1099 for both spouses it will ask for each person.

Here is a screenshot where it asks.  But they might have changed some wording after I made this one.

Thank you both.  Not sure if you work for TurboTax or a community member.

In any case, yes, I must have gone too quickly and check the wrong boxes.  This could have been a critical error for my finances.

I depend on TurboTax to have the algorithms to help me not make mistakes like this.  I did not claim and address out of the country yet the program allowed me to make this error.

I would suggest an addition to the "everything looks good" algorithm.

    Regards
