Should line 8 be a number different from the std deduction or the itemized deductions?

Line 8 on the filled out form is more than $24,000.  The std deduction is $24,000 and my schedule A total is less than $24,000

Yes, if you or your spouse are age 65 or over and/or blind.  You get an additional $1,300 for each person that meets one (or both) of those qualifications.
