If I have a major purchase within the year such as a car, but is paid through a car loan including the sales tax, do I still claim this on my taxes as a major purchase?

due to purchasing it at the end of the year, no payments on the aut loan were made until after the new year Jan of the following year. If I do qualify, do I claim it on 2018 or 2019 taxes?
