Why is My Standard Deduction $0?

Why am I being told "Good News: You're getting a standard deduction of Zero."?

I understand this should be a fixed amount?

Why is My Standard Deduction $0?

If your filing status is married filing separately and your spouse is itemizing deductions, then you must also itemize deductions. Otherwise, your standard deduction is $0.

If your spouse is not itemizing deductions, you may change your answer which will allow you to take the regular standard deduction of $12,550 for married filing separately:

  1. Click on My Info on the left side menu.
  2. Click Edit next to your Filing status of Married filing separately.
  3. Confirm your filing status and hit Continue
  4. Under Let's see if these apply if the first box is clicked Either my spouse or I claim itemized deductions you can unclick it if both of you are taking the standard deduction.

If this does not describe your situation and TurboTax is still showing a $0 standard deduction, it may be due to a system issue. These can often be fixed by clearing your cache and cookies. Try logging out, clearing your cache, and then logging back in to see if TurboTax adjusts your standard deduction amount.
