To qualify for child tax credit, a child must have been under age 17 (i.e., 16 years old or younger) at the end of the tax year for which you claim the credit. So, if the child is 17 at the end of the year, that is why you are not getting the credit.

If your child turned 17 in 2017, even on the last day of 2017, you do not get the child tax credit. There are no exceptions to the rule. You can still claim your child as a dependent.
