Where do I find 'Other Interest Paid' in the Mortgage Deduction Section

I am using TurboTax Premier desktop version on Windows 11.

I am having problems entering mortgage interest without form 1098.  Per TurboTax AI Assistant:

________________________________________________________________________

To enter mortgage interest without a Form 1098 in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. Open TurboTax: Start your tax return.
  2. Navigate to Deductions & Credits: Go to the "Deductions & Credits" section.
  3. Find Mortgage Interest: Look for the "Mortgage Interest and Refinancing" section.
  4. Select 'Other Interest Paid': If you didn't receive a Form 1098, you can enter the amount in the "Other interest paid" field.
  5. Provide Details: Enter the lender's information and the amount of interest you paid.

However, there is no 'Other Interest Paid'.  Does anyone know where I can find this?

In TurboTax for Desktop, go to Federal Taxes >> Deductions & Credits >> "I'll choose what I work on" >> Mortgage Interest, Points, etc. >> Start/Update >> Add a Lender.

Note this section will accept interest paid on a primary residence or a second home. If you paid investment interest, or interest for a business or rental property, you would need to report the expense under the related topic.

What you stated above is for the entry using a 1098 form.  Can you provide information on entering mortgage interest without any 1098 form?  If filing manually, I will be able to do this.  Also, other tax software, e.g., TaxSlayer, TaxAct, provide forms for me to enter interest without 1098.

Use the same instructions even if you don't have a 1098 form.   The lender is whoever you paid the interest to.   You will be asked a question about which situations apply.  Mark the box that says I do not have a 1098.

Yes, I did go thru these steps.  However, the next steps will continue to ask exactly the same questions as a regular 1098, e.g., Origination Date, which I do not have since I don't have a standard 1098 form.

Any other suggestions?

In the situation you described, enter the information requested even though you don't have a Form 1098. You have identified the situation correctly if you indicated where asked that you didn't receive a 1098.

It's necessary to enter the mortgage origination date and other information requested for the remaining questions because it can affect the deductibility of your interest depending on other factors, such as the loan amount, based on law changes.

As stated in this help article, other documents, like your monthly mortgage bills and your Closing Disclosure (or HUD-1), will also have some of the information.
