Using my Vehicle for Gig work.

I'm a gig worker as a handyman. I track the mileage from home to jobsite and to and from the DIY Stores. Can I get a deduction for using my vehicke to go to the jobsite, carry my tools and equipemnt, do estimates, and carry materials?

Yes, if you are self-employed you may deduct your vehicle expenses or take the standard mileage deduction for miles you drive for your "gig work".  If you choose to take the actual vehicle expenses instead of the standard mileage deduction, you will need to still enter your miles for your gig work and your miles for your personal travel so that your total vehicle expenses can be prorated based on business use.   You cannot deduct vehicle expenses for personal use.

As for carrying materials, yes, you can include the miles that you drive to Lowes or Home Depot or wherever to pick up materials or if you need to use a bigger vehicle to carry a ladder to the site or you are delivering equipment to the site.

You cannot include personal miles driven just because your tools or equipment remain in the vehicle.

To enter your vehicle expenses select the following:

  • Business Income and Expenses
  • Update or Start next to Business Income and Expenses
  • Edit or add a business
  • Update or start next to Business vehicle expense
