Turbo Tax Says My Adult Daughter is a Dependent??

My daughter is in school getting her bachelor's degree. She turned 24 in December. I thought she was no longer elligible to be claimed on my taxes.  She made about $2000 last year and will file taxes too. She is not disabled or any other special circumstances. Is it correct that she is down on my taxes as a dependent still?  Help! Thanks!

Yes, the wording is awkward and you are smart. You are correct that dependent qualifying child ends when they turn 24. Since she made less than $5,050, she is now a qualifying relative to be claimed on your return.

@colcol17  there are two types of dependents - Qualified Children and Qualified Relatives.  She is no longer a Qualified Child.

As long as she earned less than $5,050 in 2024, and you provide more than 50% of her financial support, she is your Qualified Relative.  There is no age limitation on this designation or any requirement that she lives with you, so she could be your Qualified Relative for many, many years if the requirements continue to be met.
