If your HSA was underfunded and you paid some med expenses out of pocket, can you get a tax credit? To make it like you had contributed and paid everything from the HSA?

Say you contributed $1000 pretax dollars to your HSA, but your medical expenses that year were $4000.  You drained that $1000 and then paid the other $3000 out of pocket.  Is there a way to enter that $3000 so that it gives you the tax credit back as if that had been pretax dollars?  Kind of like, pretending you had put in the full $4000 in from the beginning?  If not, I assume that reimbursing yourself is the only option to get the pretax benefit.

The only way to get the pre-tax benefit is to deposit the money into your HSA.

You can make contributions to your HSA for 2016 through April 18, 2017.

For additional information click IRS Publication 969 Health Savings Accounts .
