TX State tax rate is 6.5% and that's the rate for new car purchases. Bought new car and paid X in sales tax, and reported in 2017 Turbotax. However total sales tax deduction is exactly X with no additional amount for estimated sales tax for everything else purchased in TX. I don't think I would have to itemize every purchase just to enter sales tax on a major purchase.

You don't have to go through that process. You can take the estimated amount and add to it, large purchases. Go to the sales tax section and choose ''Easy Guide''. You will be able to add to large purchases, by clicking on the pencil icon (Edit) next to the state where the purchases were made.
TurboTax will combine the general estimated sales tax deduction (based on where you lived) with the sales tax you entered for large purchases to arrive at your total sales tax deduction.
The easiest way to get back there is to type 'sales tax' into the search bar and use the 'Jump to' link. See image below.
