Education expense deduction left in for non-dependent

I had originally listed my son as a dependent, then entered education expenses I incurred for him. I later removed him as a dependent, but neglected to remove his education expenses. It got caught by the state, who sent sent me an audit assessment letter listing the additional tax and interest I owe. It seems to me that TurboTax could have warned me that I'm claiming a deduction for someone not listed as a dependent.

When you amended the federal return did you fail to also amend the state ?  Did you not mail in the state amendment ?    If so this was your error by not completing the entire interview process.
