Can I take deduction for costs incurred for my employment

If you are self-employed, then you can deduct payments you made for rent as a business expense on Schedule C.

If you are an employee receiving a W-2, employee business expenses are no longer deductible on your Federal return.  The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the employee business expense deduction for 2018 through 2025.  Some state returns do still allow a deduction, so you can still enter the expense on Form 2106 for a possible state deduction.

Use the following steps to go to that section of your return:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “2106” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 2106
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 2106” link
