National Guard Travel expense on Active Duty Mission

I am a national guard who has served on an Active Duty Mission for more than 90 days. The mission location is more than 100 miles away from my house and I have made frequent trips back and forth between the mission location and the house. Can I deduct these mileages from my income?

Yes, for travel more than 100 miles from your home National Guard reservists may deduct ordinary and necessary expenses for mileage, parking, tolls, and ferry fees.  To enter these into TurboTax:

  1. Click on the Search Tool (magnifying glass) in the upper right of the screen.
  2. Type in the search term employee business expenses.
  3. Click on the Jump to link.
  4. Select the radio button for Armed Forces reservist.
  5. Enter the information requested.
