Medical Expenses out of pocket

I paid over $2,000 for an ambulance ride when uninsured. Can I get any sort of deduction from this?

Medical Expenses out of pocket

Yes, but only if you itemize deductions and total medical expenses exceed 10% of your income.

To enter medical expenses in TurboTax, go to:

Federal Taxes , then

Deductions & Credits

Click Show More next to Medical

Click Start/Revisit box next to Medical Expenses.

As you continue through the interview, you will be asked:

Tell us about anything spent on medical travel

Tell us about any other medical expenses  (enter tolls and ambulance costs here)

Keep in mind the following about deducting your medical expenses:

  • You don't get the benefit if you are taking the standard deduction.
  • If you itemize deductions, you will only be able to take total medical expenses that are greater than:
    • 10% of your adjusted gross income if you are under age 65; or
    • 7.5% of your adjusted gross income if you are age 65 or over.
