Medical Deduction for taking care of parents

My wife has to fly out to take her parents to medical appointments.

They have dementia and can no go alone.

Are those expenses deductible as medical expenses on our taxes?

Medical Deduction for taking care of parents

No. The parents would need to be your dependents to claim medical expenses. Airplane flights are not generally medical expenses. With dementia, their caregiver would be the expected source to take them to doctors. For full details, see Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses
