Itemized Deductions - How to force

If your standard deduction is greater than your itemized deduction, after you walk through and enter all of your itemized expenses, you will come to a screen that says your standard deduction is greater than your itemized expenses so we are giving you the standard deduction.

Then there is a little box on the screen that allows you to choose to use itemized deductions anyway.  If you have already passed that point, you can use the instructions below to force the switch.

Also, if you are married filing separately and your spouse is itemizing, you can go back to the personal info section and say your spouse is itemizing.  This will force you to itemize.

If you are a nonresident alien trying to file using TurboTax, TurboTax only files the Form 1040, not the 1040NR that a nonresident needs to file.  You will not be able to use TurboTax to file your return, however you can file through Sprintax.com as they support the 1040NR.

Switch from Standard to Itemized Deduction.
